On
Saturday, December 4, 2010 the Washington D.C. community of hula halau
and hui unveiled the Let's Move with Hula Project sponsored by the
Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Ke Ali`i Maka`ainana Hawaiian Civic Club of
Washington, D.C., Halau O `Aulani and Arlington County through the
Cultural Affairs Division of the Department of Parks, Recreation and
Cultural Resources.
The Let's Move with
Hula Project is an extension of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move
Initiative highlighting Childhood Diabetes and Obesity. Kumu Hula
Keith Kalanikau Awai of Haleiwa, O`ahu, Hawai`i took keiki, opio, kane,
wahine, alaka`i and kupuna representing area hula halau and hui through
their paces with basic hula steps. Phew, what a workout it
was!!
The Let's Move with
Hula Project objectives include, 1) demonstrating this community's
capacity to decrease obesity and diabetes in our children through the
art and traditions of Hula, and 2) demonstrating the physical
strength, stamina, coordination and conditioning it takes to
participate in the art and traditions of a year round hula
program. We pledge to continue to learn about healthy food
choices and diets to maintain sufficient strength, stamina,
coordination and conditioning. It is a life choice made by the
ohana.
